Indian Hill is defined by its acreage: large lots, bridle trails and a village government that has kept the density low for generations. The planning work here is less about whether there is enough and more about structure, since households often hold a closely held business, several generations of family assets and a set of trusts that need to actually match what is owned.

What Indian Hill retires from

The employers and retirement plans we see most often from Indian Hill households. These are the details that decide when you can retire and what you keep.

Senior leadership at Cincinnati-headquartered public companies

Executive compensation arrives as restricted stock, performance shares and deferred pay, each with its own election deadline and its own tax year to plan around.

Great American Insurance Group

Insurance and investment careers downtown often include deferral plans whose payout schedules are chosen years in advance and become difficult to adjust.

Closely held family businesses

Multi-generation ownership raises the question of who runs the company next and who simply owns part of it, which are different decisions that families often merge by accident.

Employer plans are described in general terms. Your own benefits, elections and deadlines govern, and we review them directly rather than assuming.

Questions

Questions from Indian Hill

My deferred compensation election is due this fall. What should drive the decision?

The years you will actually receive the money, not the year you defer it. Deferral makes sense when it moves income into a lower-bracket year, and it works against you when it stacks on top of required distributions later. A projection that looks out ten years is the right basis for the election.

We have trusts but I am not sure what is in them. Where do we begin?

With an inventory of what you own and how each item is titled, held against what the documents assume. Unfunded trusts are common, and so are accounts added after the drafting that name individuals directly. MCF has estate planning capability on the team, and this reconciliation is usually the highest-value hour in the process.

Our family business will pass to some children but not others. How is that usually handled?

Carefully, and in writing, while everyone can still talk about it. The common approach separates control from value: the children running the business hold the operating interest, and the others are made whole with other assets or insurance. Doing this in advance avoids leaving the fairness question to a document.
