Hilliard sits on the west side, close enough to the Honda operations up in Marysville and the supplier network along the 33 corridor that manufacturing shapes a real share of local working life. Alongside that are commuters heading east into the city and a fast-growing school district. The result is a practical, dual-income profile where retirement timing is often set by service milestones rather than by preference.

What Hilliard retires from

The employers and retirement plans we see most often from Hilliard households. These are the details that decide when you can retire and what you keep.

Honda of America and the supplier network

The Marysville operations and the suppliers around them employ a great many long-tenured people in this part of the metro. Careers like these build substantial retirement plan balances that have frequently never been coordinated with a spouse's account.

JPMorgan Chase

A common commute from the west side. Banking retirements bring restricted stock, trading restrictions and, for longer-tenured employees, a concentrated position that grew gradually enough that nobody flagged it.

Hilliard City Schools

One of the larger districts in the metro. Ohio teaching retirements involve service credit and payout elections filed at a single moment, and the choice between options is easier to make with a projection in hand.

Employer plans are described in general terms. Your own benefits, elections and deadlines govern, and we review them directly rather than assuming.

Questions

Questions from Hilliard

My retirement date is set by my employer's service rules, not by me. Is planning still worth it?

It is worth more, not less. A fixed date turns everything else into preparation: the withdrawal order, whether to convert anything at lower rates in the years beforehand, and how health coverage gets bridged if the date arrives before Medicare does. A known deadline is the easiest kind of plan to build, because there is nothing to guess about.

How would this work practically? We are on the west side and you are in Cincinnati.

West side actually puts you at the shorter end of the drive, a little under two hours, though the relationship still runs on video for the routine work. The pattern most Hilliard households settle into is a longer in-person planning session once a year and shorter video reviews in between, scheduled around work rather than squeezed into a lunch hour.

We both have 401(k) balances from different employers. Does it matter that they are managed separately?

It usually does. Two plans chosen independently tend to hold overlapping investments, so the household is less diversified than it looks on paper. Coordinating them also lets us place the right assets in the right account for tax purposes, which is a benefit you only get by looking at the household as one portfolio.
